What it helps

Where needling earns its place

Neck, traps, and headaches

Desk-posture trigger points in the upper traps and levator that refer pain into the head and shoulder blade.

Low back and glutes

Guarded spinal muscles and deep glute trigger points that mimic sciatica and limit hinging and lifting.

Shoulders, calves, and quads

Rotator cuff knots, stubborn calf tightness in runners, and quad or hip flexor restriction in lifters.

How it works at R1

The needle opens the door. Strength walks through it.

A thin monofilament needle is placed into the trigger point, often producing a brief local twitch. That twitch resets the tight band of muscle, improves local blood flow, and turns down the pain signal. The effect is real, but on its own it is temporary. That is why at R1 dry needling lives inside a full plan: your 90-minute evaluation finds why the muscle keeps overworking, needling releases it, and progressive loading makes the change permanent.

Needling here is performed only by a doctor of physical therapy, often combined with cupping, manual therapy, and the strength floor. It pairs well with treatment for low back pain, knee pain, and return-to-sport rehab.

Dry needling FAQs

Straight answers

Does dry needling hurt?

Most people feel a quick, deep ache or a muscle twitch rather than sharp pain. The twitch is the trigger point releasing. Soreness afterward is common for a day, similar to a hard workout.

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

No. The needles are similar, but dry needling is a Western, anatomy-based technique that targets specific trigger points and dysfunctional muscle tissue identified during your movement exam.

How many sessions until I feel a difference?

Many patients notice a change within 1 to 3 sessions. At R1, needling is never the whole plan; it opens a window of reduced pain and better mobility that we immediately use for strength work, which is what makes the change last.

Is dry needling covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by plan. We are in-network with major carriers and verify your benefits before your first visit, and we offer transparent self-pay options where a plan excludes needling.
